How to Get to the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire

Every realistic route to the estate — by car from Tours, Blois and Amboise, by train from Paris, and how to fit Chaumont into a wider Loire Valley trip.

Chaumont-sur-Loire sits almost exactly between Blois and Tours, which makes it a natural stop on almost any Loire Valley château circuit — but it isn't on a main rail line, so reaching it without a car takes a little more planning than Amboise or Blois themselves. This guide covers the practical routes from each major gateway town, what to expect by train, and how to slot Chaumont into a multi-château itinerary without excessive backtracking.

By Car — the Easiest Way

Driving is by far the simplest way to reach Chaumont-sur-Loire, and most Loire Valley visitors touring by car will find it a painless stop. The estate sits on the D751 and D952, roughly 15 km from Blois and about 40 km from Tours — around 20 and 40 minutes' drive respectively, depending on traffic. From Amboise, the drive is around 20 km, comfortably under 30 minutes, making Chaumont one of the easiest add-ons to an Amboise-based day. Free parking is available at the estate itself, directly by the entrance, so there's no need to budget extra time or money for parking once you arrive.

Because Chaumont sits roughly on the line between Blois and Tours, it works naturally as a midpoint stop for visitors driving between the two — rather than a detour, it can simply be built into the route. Combined with its proximity to Amboise and Chambord (also within about 40 minutes), a self-driven Loire itinerary can comfortably take in Chaumont alongside two or three other châteaux across a single day or a relaxed multi-day trip.

By Train — Via Onzain or Blois

The nearest railway station is Onzain–Chaumont-sur-Loire, on the opposite bank of the river from the estate, about 2 km away with a connecting shuttle service to bridge the final leg. From Paris-Austerlitz, direct trains reach Onzain in around 1 hour 40 minutes, making a day trip from Paris realistic if you plan your connections carefully. Trains on this line run less frequently than the high-speed connections to Tours or Blois, so it's worth checking timetables in advance rather than assuming a train every hour.

If your Paris or Tours train times don't align neatly with Onzain, Blois is the more convenient rail gateway — a larger station about 15 km from the estate with considerably more frequent connections, from which a taxi covers the remaining distance in roughly 20 minutes. Travellers coming from Tours can also reach Blois quickly by train and continue by taxi, avoiding the sparser Onzain timetable altogether.

Combining Chaumont With Other Loire Châteaux

Chaumont's location between Blois and Tours, and its proximity to Amboise, makes it easy to combine with the Loire Valley's other headline châteaux without a lot of driving. Chambord sits about 40 minutes away, Blois itself (with its own château) about 20 minutes, and Amboise under 30 minutes — meaning a base in any of these towns puts Chaumont within easy reach for a half-day or full-day visit. Many visitors pair Chaumont with Chenonceau or Amboise on the same day, using the D751/D952 corridor along the river as a natural driving route.

For visitors without a car relying on Tours or Blois as a rail base, Chaumont takes more planning than châteaux directly on the main line, so it's worth building a dedicated half-day or full day around it rather than trying to squeeze it in alongside a same-day visit to a further-flung château. Given the size of the estate — a half-day at minimum, more if the Garden Festival season is running — Chaumont works best as its own focused outing rather than a quick add-on.
